Private investigator John March is handed the most unusual case of his career when the beautiful Claire Ward turns up at his office asking for help. Her husband, the esteemed chemical engineer Charles Dexter Ward, has started dabbling in strange and secretive experiments, and has recently moved out of the marital home and into a remote and disused ancestral farmhouse to continue his activities in privacy.
